About the Rhode Island Historical Society: As the 4th oldest historical society in the United States, the Rhode Island Historical Society is dedicated to honoring, interpreting and sharing Rhode Island’s past to enrich the present and inspire the future. Founded in 1822, we are the only state-wide history organization in Rhode Island. Our collections are comprised of: 25,000 museum objects, 5,000 manuscripts, 100,000 books and printed items, 400,000 photographs and maps, and 9 million feet of motion-picture film.
